A SHIFT 6-7-2008
Engine 4 & Ladder 4 were dispatched for a water flow alarm at a milling
company. As Engine 4 turned down W. 10th St., they saw a column of smoke rising
from the rear of the plant. Engine 4 advised to fill the box and upon arrival
advised working fire. Engine 4 backed down behind the building and laid off a
200' 2-½ pre-connect. After charging the pre-connect, Batt. 1 arrived and
advised Engine 4 to unhook the line and pull out for Ladder 4 and Ladder 1 to
get into position. Engine 4 moved and the ladders both made the roof. Engine 4
laid a supply line from Ladder 1 to Engine 11 who was already hooked to the
hydrant. Ladder 1 then reconnected Engine 4's 2-½ and
also dropped a 1-¾ line. As Engine 4 investigated they
saw heavy electrical lines coming from and around the fire room. They decided to
hit the fire with dry chemical extinguishers until someone could verify about
the power. Batt. 1 took command and ordered a 2nd alarm assignment. After the
initial knockdown a lot of overhaul and investigation into the plant and grain
silos was done for possible extension.
Companies on the box were:
